What pastoral services does your institute provide?

The monthly “Catholic Pastoral Information” at present supplies the useful information to the pastors acting in the scene, and plays the role as a place of interchanging the experiences and information between the pastors. And accumulating data on the whole of ministry, it arranges the foundation of the multiple evangelization and service through the cyber space.

What pastoral aims does your institute pursue?

Publication of monthly “Catholic Pastoral Information” in Korean edition and English edition.

What pastoral processes have you initiated or accompanied recently?

Spread for free “The priesthood” by Pope Benedict XVI, translating into Korean language and publishing, to all the priests in Korea.

What does this mean for the areas of catechesis, deaconry and liturgy?

The publication of monthly “Catholic Pastoral Information” is explained in the territory of the Gospel proclamation. It contributes to the evangelization mission of the church through media.

What notion of God inspires your work?

Jesus proclaiming the Gospel, God impartial to the communication of information and open to anyone.

In how far does Christian spirituality shape your work?

In the morning the community are gathered and pray and does the spiritual reading, and before a meeting asks for the leading of the Holy Spirit.

What processes do you use or develop to analyse reality? How are these elaborated and how are they linked to pastoral care? How do you pass these processes on?

It grasps the present situation of Korean ministry through the scene cover, the analysis of the reality and the church and society; At the time of the first publication planning we organized the report items centered on the vision for preparing ‘the scene pastoral alternative plans keeping pace with the rapidly changing time. The pastoral scene, youth pastoral scene, the pastoral scene where the priest and laypeople make together, the pastoral experiences of a leading (elder) priest, hobby life of a priest, a layperson acting hard, the lay group, it planned diversely in order to contain the voices of the scene. And it has tried to suggest a big framework and alternative plan to the ministry by the subject and class approach through special themes and the common good every month; In order to know the pastoral necessity of the priests, we organize items based on it, performing a questionnaire, and sometimes coordinate the whole organization in order to organize the adequate items, analysing the pastoral environment changing every year; Since the situation of the pastoral scenes is shared, the good pastoral programs are shared and connected to the pastoral care.

What prophetic approaches does the institute put into practice with a view to shaping society?

The problem of how to read and realize ‘the signs of the times’ discussed

In the Second Vatican Council is the very problem about how we may realize the common good in our land. The Pastoral Information, making a fixed corner, Bonum Commune (common good), handles various subjects of ecology, life labour (farmers), the minority, and is doing the endless interest and search, and reflection for these.

What does the work of the institute involve exactly? (Framework conditions? Publications? Courses? Lectures? Congress?...)

Issue of publications ‘Catholic Pastoral Information’ is published monthly; Symposium and seminar: it opened symposium and seminar over 4 times, or Presentation of the Evangelization Alternative Plan (Dandelion Evangelization, Sigma course) in 2008/Plan for Inviting of the lapsed faithful in 2010/the reality and prospect of the North Korea evangelization, the Creed and New Evangelization.

What magazines, periodicals, books, manuals, work aids, methodological instructions etc. does your institute publish?

‘Catholic Pastoral Information’ is published monthly.

What do you consider to be the most important service of your institute?

We think that we are arranging the foundation of finding the alternative pastoral direction, containing and recording vividly the voices of the pastoral scenes being made in the Korean Catholic Church.

How do you evaluate the work of your institute?

We have a sense of duty, arranging a place of the information’s communication about the pastoral programs and thinking it as an office able to contribute to the pastoral progress of the Korean Catholic Church.

What are the most important developments that you are dealing with at present?

We are making efforts to arrange the pastoral alternative plan in the good direction, planning the special themes and common good meeting with the liturgical time the general social situations on every occasion.

What are the main difficulties your institute is confronted with in its work?

We have bottlenecks in publishing the Pastoral Information in English edition. Since we run short of the professional manpower who commands English at the native level, we have difficulties in translating the terms of liturgy and the church; Since it is the professional magazine of the Catholic Church, the personal organization itself has a difference from the general press. It is difficult to find the professional manpower quipped with the theological knowledge, and time and efforts are necessary in training the manpower.

What challenges do you perceive for your institute at present?

Though Korea uniquely has a short Catholic history in Asia, it made rapid progress. We think that this pastoral ability must be learned by the foreign church also of Europe. We are trying to be an instrument of informing the lead of this.

What hopes, dreams and visions do you have for your institute?

We hope to be the motive power in deciding the pastoral direction of Korean Catholic Church, communicating with the more priests, religious, and lay leaders.

To what extent does your institute support laypeople in the Church and in society?

We are introducing the activity content, finding out the lay group, veteran layperson, and arrange a place where an excellent lay writer can make a suggestion for the church.

How do you communicate your experiences and results to the respective local church, to neighbouring local churches and to other addressees (e.g. institutions affiliated to you)?

We are connected with the church institutions of the Catholic weekly newspaper, Catholic PyeonghwaShinmun, the Research Institute of Korean Church History. Established as the scientific treatise DB through dbpia of Noori media, anyone can have easily the pastoral information through a check site for the knowledge content scientific treatise, and in the national library and the National Assembly library can see the original text easily.

To what extent does cooperation with the Bishops’ Conference of your country or with your diocese take place?

We are working, receiving help, connected with the committee by the field of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea.

What linkages/networks are in existence at national level?

We have an advisory committee member by each diocese, and are receiving advices of the academic world and the press.

What linkages/networks are in existence at international level?

We are sending the Pastoral Information in English edition to the Vatican Holy See and the foreign famous university libraries. Supporting the evangelization group I the south America, we are communicating connected with the missionaries in the foreign mission places.

What kind of interreligious cooperation does take place with non-Christian religions?

We are open to the non-Christian specialist. In case of a specialist related to the subject among the non-Christians, we are making efforts in the interreligious dialogue, covering as writer or a person for interview and introducing them.

What kind of ecumenical cooperation does take place with non-Catholic churches?

We are open to the specialist except for the Catholic faithful. In case of a specialist related to the subject among the other religion faithful, we are making efforts for the unity of Christianity, covering and introducing a writer or a person for interviews.

Which theological mergers/associations are you affiliated with (personally or as an institute)?

In Case of research writings able to grasp the recent theological trend, we are introducing it through the corner of ‘forum’

How can we assist you with your intercontinental exchanges and with exchanges between the continents?

We would like you to introduce a lot the activities of the Pastoral Information to the foreign pastoral Institutions; If there is an institution which is curious about the pastoral situation of Korea, we can supply our magazine every month; If there is information of a good institution, you’d better send it to us; if we can know the important events and issues of the world Catholic Church every month or by the semester, it will be helpful to our planning.
